First Post + Your Most Effortless Skincare
"When's the last time you took a little time for yourself?"
Mac Miller said it best. If you had to think for longer than five seconds for an answer to this question, then you've come to the right place.
Welcome! I'm Rebecca, and I'm so glad that you're here. To give you an idea of where I am as I craft this post and attempt to describe what I hope this blog will be, I am currently sitting on the ground of my college apartment, drinking chamomile out of a holiday mug, even though the holidays are long gone, and listening to Frank Ocean. But I suppose that is the idea here: I want this blog to be written in a casual way so that it is as enjoyable to read as it is to write.
I hope R+R with Rebecca will be a space for us to find comfort, beauty, and enjoyment in the little things. Writing and journaling alike bring me joy, and I'm excited to use both as ways to share my journey toward a more relaxed and purposeful life with you all.
Okay, enough about me. Today's post is all about something I think is often over-complicated: skincare.
No shade to Kylie Jenner, but the skincare market is, in my opinion, overly saturated with products that sell because of aesthetics, the name, or pretty packaging rather than how effective or good for your skin they are.
I'm sure you are wondering what the heck gives me the authority to comment on Kylie Jenner's skincare line and skincare in general. Ironically enough, Kourtney Kardashian. I'm kidding. Sort of.
In Kourtney's video with Vogue, she mentioned that she's a huge fan of EWG's Healthy Living App, an app that rates more than 120,000 food and personal care products, including your favorite skincare products.
The Environmental Working Group is an American environmental organization that specializes in research and advocacy in the areas of toxic chemicals, agricultural subsidies, public lands, and corporate accountability. All good stuff, right?
They make it super easy to decipher which skincare (and home/food!) products are good for you and the earth, and which ones aren't. Simply scan the product you are considering and EWG gives you its toxicity level using a cool color-coded system. I quickly became obsessed.
If you're imagining me sitting in the aisle of Harmon Face Values, scanning every.single.skincare.product I've ever used, you clearly know me well.
Needless to say, this app changed my skincare game. With a little research and a whole lot of scanning, I came across the skin-friendly and earth-friendly brand, La Roche Posay. Now, their products take up most of my bathroom real estate. I use these products, in addition to jojoba oil, religiously:
- Hydrating Gentle Face Cleanser ($14.99)
- Double Repair Face Moisturizer- UV SPF 30 ($19.99)
- Double Repair Face Moisturizer ($19.99)
But Rebecca, what if we have different skin types?
I get it, everyone's skin is completely different. What works for me may not work for you. What I'm suggesting is that by being more conscious about what we're putting into our skin and bodies, we can more easily develop solid, individualized, skincare routines. By weeding out the products and brands that do little to improve our skin and may actually harm it, we are left with fewer options.
